Chicago, the musical, is originally a play of the same name written by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins in 1926. The story is based on actual criminals that Maurine reported on. It is a satirical take on the corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of “celebrity criminal”.
Maurine’s columns in the Chicago Tribune documenting the 1924 trials of murderesses Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner became so sensational that she decided to write a play based on them. Beulah, who was developed into the character of Roxie Hart, was 23 when she was accused of the murder of Harry Kalstedt, on April3, 1924. It was reported in the Tribune that she played the foxtrot record “Hula Lou” again and again for two hours before calling her husband. She claimed that she killed the man who “tried to make love to her” and was found not guilty on May 25, 1924.The character of Velma is based on a cabaret singer, Gaertner. On March 12, 1924 the body of Walter Law was discovered slumped over the steering wheel of Gaertner’s car. She was acquitted of the murder on June 6, 1924. The complex character of the lawyer, Billy Flynn, was based on actual lawyers William Scott Stewart and W.W.O’Brien.
The original musical Broadway production was made by Bob Fosse which opened on June 3, 1975 and ran for 936 performances. The music is by John Kander with lyrics by Fred Ebb. As of today, Chicago’s 1996 Broadway revival holds the record for the longest-running musical revival on Broadway and is its fourth longest-running show. It has played for than 5,900 performances.
This classic musical has also been made into a movie musical in 2002, directed by Rob Marshall and starred Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere, John C. Reilly, and Queen Latifah The movie went on to win Academy Award.

The tradition continues with another Bridge School Benefit Concert all set to take place this October. The 25th edition of the concert will happen on October 22, 2011 at 5pm and October 23, 2011 at 2pm. This charity event has put the Shoreline Amphitheatre, California on the music radar.
Behind the Concert
The Bridge School Benefit Concert was the brainchild of the Young couple – Neil and Pegi. This is an annual charity event held to benefit the Bridge School – a non-profit organization working for the advancement of people with speech and physical impairments. It was in the year 1986 that the couple was driven to found such a school for their own son Ben, who did not have any other option. The first benefit concert was held the same year on October 13 and except for the year 1987, every year the month of October brings this event to the Bay Area and it is a crowd puller.
The concert
The main highlight of the concert is that it is an all-acoustic concert. The performers in this event are all high profile musicians because of Neil’s effort. Neil Young also performs in the concert. This year you can look forward to the performances of Neil Young, Arcade Fire, Dave Matthews, Eddie Vedder, Foo Fighters, Tony Bennett and Mumford & Sons, Beck, Diana Krall, Jenny Lewis and Los Invisibles, featuring Carlos Santana.
What is the Benefit for?
This is a non- profit charity event. The proceeds from the concerts go to the educational development of the disabled people. The Bridge School aims at the progress of the people with speech and physical impairments, to ensure that they are a visible part of their own community. The Bridge School has come up with a unique augmentative & alternative means of communication (AAC) and assistive technology (AT) applications to aid such people. It is a world-renowned organization working in such an innovative area of assistive technology.

Are you sure that you know everything about Mickey and Minnie. But there is a different kind of adventure- a special journey they have been taking together for more than a decade.
Mickey and Minnie’s Magical Journey is nothing short of magical; they enthrall you this time on skates.
Mickey and Minnie – the biggest stars from the house of Disney need no introduction. You must be familiar with them from the numerous Disney productions or from your visit to the Disney world. Now they are skating their way to you.
The beginning of the journey
It all started with the idea of Feld Entertainment to produce a touring ice show. Thus, Disney on Ice began with an agreement between Feld Entertainment and the Walt Disney Company. When it began in 1981 it was called “Walt Disney’s World on Ice” and later in the year 1998 it became “Disney on Ice”. The target audience this time was also children. Indeed this was a refreshingly new way to capture their attention.
Disney on Ice has figure skaters who put on the costumes of popular Disney cartoon characters. They base their performances on the various Disney Productions. The music, plots, and the unique mannerisms of each character are thus adapted as performances on ice. Though the performers remain anonymous, they are given the credit of the Disney Characters.
There are eight production and touring companies at a time. They perform all over the world, even in the Americas, the Middle East, and Asia, Australia and Europe.
Mickey & Minnie’s Magical Journey
Mickey & Minnie’s Magical Journey is one of the most popular tours ever. It began touring in the year 1995 as Mickey and Minnie’s Amazing Journey. It has been entertaining the audience worldwide for the past 16 years and counting. It has been the longest running show in the history of Disney on Ice.
It opened first in St. Petersburg, Florida on October 12, 1995. It tells the story of the adventures of Mickey and Minnie as they journey through different places like Under the Sea, Neverland, Hawaii, and Africa. The show was later called Mickey & Minnie’s Magical Journey.
Mickey and Minnie are coming to you now. Grab your tickets today!

The Big Five Classical music symphony orchestras are the most accomplished and prominent ensembles in the country. The term began to be used in the music circles in the late 1950s. The Big Five was fist listed in the Time magazine in 1983:
- New York Philharmonic
- Boston Symphony Orchestra
- Chicago Symphony Orchestra
- Philadelphia Orchestra
- Cleveland Orchestra
Big Five is not a popular usage today, nonetheless, the symphony orchestras are the most acclaimed and accomplished in the country. They continue to be the benchmark that many orchestras in America strive to achieve. Music critics have argued for other orchestras to be included in the list. The new orchestras that have been suggested by music critics as worthy of being included among the top orchestras in the country are
- Los Angeles Philharmonic
- San Francisco Symphony
- Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
- Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
- Houston Symphony
- Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
- Minnesota Orchestra
- Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra

There are hundreds of phenomenal rock songs, but the top 10 greatest rock songs of all times define the particular eras when they were created and usually preceded a new wave of musical style. Some of these songs have transcended time and become ever popular rock songs that continue to thrill rock music lovers even today.
10. Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana (1991)
Nirvana had lyrical sentiments and a rawness that influenced an entire generation of rock music and completely changed the entertainment paradigm. A drastic change from the hair metal rock star posers of the 80s, Nirvana was fresh and smelled like teen spirit.
9. Statesboro Blues – Allman Brothers (1971)
This was the song that introduced rock fans to the slide guitar style of Duane Allman.
8. Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin (1971)
Stairway to Heaven is still one of the most popular rock songs all over the world. It is a must-learn in a beginner guitarist’s song list. The song is a masterpiece of rock music composition. It completely captured the mysticism and fantasy of the 70s.
7. While My Guitar Gently Weeps – The Beatles (1968)
An excellent composition that showcases the soulful playing of Eric Clapton and George Harrison.
6. Eruption – Van Halen (1978)
Blazing fast, precision guitar playing of Eddie Van Halen was all the rage through the 1980s. Eruption came to music fans precisely when they were starting to get bored with the commercial offerings.
5. Brown Sugar – The Rolling Stones (1971)
Brown Sugar with its raunchy guitar and lyrics ushered in the 1970s.
4. You Really Got Me – The Kinks (1964)
You Really Got me by the Kinks was the starting point of dirty, raw garage rock. The Kinks created distorted guitar sounds and sang with no regard to the popular style.
3. Crossroads – Cream (1968)
This is a timeless Eric Clapton and Cream song. It captured the realities of the 1960s in a precise manner.
2. Purple Haze – Jimi Hendrix (1967)
Jimi Hendrix did not just play the guitar, Jimi Hendrix was the guitar. He emerged as one with the instrument and experimented in cutting edge recording effects at the time and played the guitar like no one ever did.
1. Johnny B. Goode – Chuck Berry (1958)
This is perhaps the most covered song in the history of rock and roll. Johnny B. Goode was the song that introduced guitar as the primary rock instrument.
